Celebrating 10 years! A Decade of Helena Lane

This month marks 10 years since I launched my first website!

When I fell pregnant with my son back in the winter of 2010, I was working at Whole Foods Market in Vancouver.

Although I enjoyed my work, I knew I had an opportunity to start something I had been dreaming of doing for as long as I could remember. I started putting my skin care and natural ingredient knowledge and philosophies into a solid form. By the spring I had products that we took to farmers markets in the city. With every sale I asked if I could get in touch a few months later for feedback. My son was born at home in the West End in Vancouver to the fireworks outside our window on Canada Day that summer.

Once we found a routine later that year, I gathered the feedback and my original recipes and finalized my first formulations. With the help of friends I designed the labels, took the photos and built my website. We launched the website in April 2012, and that same month I heard that I had been accepted to sell at Whole Foods Market in BC, starting that summer – that was huge!

The last 10 years have obviously flown by, but I’m proud to say that although there have been minor changes to my business and products, my values, philosophy and quality have remained solid. We still use the best quality organic ingredients, we still make everything by hand in small batches, the goal is still to get your skin back into balance, to be genuinely healthy so you can use less products over time, not more.

I am also very proud to have been a pioneer in promoting the use of oil cleansers.

I have always recommended cleansing with an oil, for all skin types, which was not a common or popular belief 10 years ago. Now, I am happy to see a multitude of oil cleansers available (remember they are not all created equal though).

I have many thoughts and dreams about where the next 10 years will take the business, and myself… to better packaging and more refill options, growing and harvesting my own plant materials, bespoke facial offerings and even a retail store. I can’t say which will happen or when, but I’m excited for the next 10 years!
