Collagen for healthy skin, nails, joints and digestion

This week on the blog, I am thrilled to welcome Registered Holistic Nutritionist Alice Savage, sharing her knowledge on collagen for skin health, along with a recipe for Collagen Lemonade!


I must have been in my mid 20’s when a relative of mine bet my cousin and I that we would be using Botox by the time we were 40. We of course said no at the time and for me it is still a firm NO.

I never really though I would be adding something into my diet with the goal of healthier hair, joint pain relief, stronger nails and firmer skin. But here we are and I am adding collagen into my diet every day.

I have noticed that my nails grow faster and the pain I was starting to have in my hand joints has disappeared. I am also experiencing a noticeable quicker healing time from cuts and scratches and reduced reactions to the food sensitivities I have.

Maybe this is because its like glue! Collagen is a structural protein, it literally holds us all together. As we age our body creates less of it and with sun exposure, excessive sugar and smoking this can make things worse. Collagen is found in all areas of our body including; ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, organs and the digestive tract.

This glue not only strengthens the nails, hair, skin and joints it supports a healthy digestive lining. A healthy digestive lining is so important to our overall health so please take note.

So where can we get it? You can purchase pure flavourless hydrolyzed collagen powder which is very easy to use. It blends well in a shaker bottle with a wire ball with cold or hot liquids. So you can put it in your tea, coffee or try my lemonade recipe below. I use this enhanced collagen by Organika and you can find it on Amazon, your local health food store or even Costco has it now.

Some other sources are homemade or frozen bone broth, chicken or salmon skin and gelatin powder. My daughter gets enough, she is always asking for everyone’s salmon skin at the end of a meal!

Alice’s Collagen Lemonade

The lemon is a source of Vitamin C which as an antioxidant plays an important role in synthesizing the collagen.

3 tbsp collagen powder

3tbsp organic lemon juice

16 oz filtered water

A couple of drops of monk fruit or stevia to taste (I prefer the taste of Monk Fruit )

Pop it all in your shaker bottle with wire ball or just whisk it up in your glass. Double it up and make a pitcher for your friends and family on those hot summer days they will thank you!
