Eye Creams & Why I don’t make one
The eye area is much talked about when discussing how we look and how we feel about our skin. Whether you feel that fine lines are the trophies of all the laughing you have done or your worst nightmare we do need to make sure this delicate area of the face is looked after just as well as the rest of our face.
Almost every skin care brand makes at least one separate eye area product so why don’t I?
Well, for 3 main reasons:
1. My face care products are perfectly safe around the eyes. The skin around the eye area is much more delicate and does not have the same extent of lymphatic system as the rest of the skin on our face. This does mean that we need to be careful what ingredients we use in this area. Many skin care products contain ingredients that are not safe, this is why a separate eye cream is produced.
2. My face care products (moisturizers, facial oils and serums) already contain the best ingredients for supporting the eye area. Vitamin A and C rich plant oils such as rosehip and sea buckthorn help to build collagen under the skin helping to decrease appearance of dark circles. Hyaluronic acid increases hydration helping to plump the area reducing fine lines and dark circles. Anti-inflammatory plants such as borage and chamomile help to reduce puffiness and irritation. I have no need to mix these into yet another product when you are already using them.
3. My philosophy of using less products, not more means that I do not create products that I don’t feel are needed, just because that’s what we are used to.
This means you most likely already have your eye area covered with the products you have. The oil-based products, moisturizers and facial oils combined with the water based hyaluronic serums, make ideal eye area support. Just remember to use the products around the area with a gentle massaging action.
If you are not getting the results you are after consider the following –
Dark circles are often caused by food sensitivities and genetics (most often increased pigmentation in the eye area) assuming you have already ruled out dehydration and lack of sleep. So, consider diet and pigmentation solutions and a UV sun cream for the area. Puffiness and wrinkles can be remedied most effectively from the inside, lots of water and diet (gluten is often blamed for puffiness in the face). And again, lack of sleep.
One of my favourite eye solutions is the old but effective cold therapy. Cucumber, cold chamomile tea bags, or teaspoons resting over the eye sockets can work wonders.
Eye creams are the most expensive (read profitable) products in the skin care industry (look at their price per ml), so just be sure it’s something you really need, and not something you are being told you need… by the people who make the money.
